2010-11 Standings2010-11 May 7, Lexington, Ky. – 2010-2011 Virginia Intermont’s IHSA Team Places in Top Ten at National Championship Virginia Intermont College finished in the top 10 at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association’s national finals Saturday, May 7 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky.
Virginia Intermont’s team finished in eighth place with the best showings by Taylor Scott’s 4th place in Walk/Trot equitation and Ashley Miller’s 4th place in Open Equitation on the Flat.
Virginia Intermont won the IHSA nationals in 2004, 2005 and 2007. Miller also placed 6th in Open Equitation Over Fences and competed for the coveted United States Equestrian Federation Cacchione Cup. With the most combined flat and over fences points, Miller is 2011′s regional high point rider, and placed ninth in the competition for the Cup, the nation’s high point riders competition in open fences with 36 riders in contention. Other team member results included Ashleigh Ramey’s 7th place in Novice Equitation on the Flat and Megan Kelty’s 9th place in Walk/Trot/Canter equitation for the team. In addition, competing as individuals, Virginia Intermont’s Felicia Matsinger placed 8th in Novice Equitation on the Flat, and in alumni classes, VI’s Ashton Phillips placed 4th in Equitation on the Flat.
April 2, Sewanee, Tenn. – 2010-2011 Virginia Intermont Equestrian Team Wins Zone 5 Championship Virginia Intermont College was champion at the Zone 5 finals for Intercollegiate Horse Show Association competition. VI’s IHSA team is bound for the national finals for the 12th straight year, the longest streak in the nation.The Zone 5 finals were Saturday, April 2 at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. Virginia Intermont finished with 43 points and overcame Savannah College of Art and Design in a tiebreaker. Sewanee was third place with 39 points and Berry College (Georgia) finished fourth with 29 points. Just before the 2010-2011 season, VI was realigned by the IHSA from Zone 4 (Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and North Carolina) to Zone 5 (Southwest Virginia, Western North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky and Arkansas.)VI entered the zone competition undefeated as Zone 5, Region 4 champion. The IHSA national finals are May 5-8 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky. Within the past month all coaches nominated students for the regional “Sportsmanship Award” and the “Regional Horse of the Year.” Virginia Intermont senior Mary Ashley Marable won the Region 4 Zone 5 “Sportsmanship Award,” marking the first time that a VI student has earned the prestigious award. The win places VI within 16 points of mathematically clinching its 12th straight regional championship.
