About the Raise the Roof Campaign:
The Smith-Canter Gymnasium, affectionately called the “Cobra Den,” is known in the Appalachian Athletic Conference for its lively, loud atmosphere that heightens the VI basketball teams’ home court advantage.  VI has initiated the “Raise the Roof” campaign, a $400,000 capital improvement plan, to benefit students and the entire College community.

Case
The Smith-Canter Gymnasium, or “Cobra Den,” has been deemed a priority project for vital repairs and lasting improvements which will boost the quality of student life and allow opportunities to realize the full potential of the Gym as a campus and community venue. While use for athletics is top priority, the Gym is an ideal facility for other events such as academic and professional fairs, receptions, community sporting events and summer camps.

During more than eight decades since the Gym was constructed in 1928, hundreds of students have improved their wellbeing through athletic training and competition, physical fitness and supporting classmates with Cobra team spirit. Combined with the academic experience, these activities contribute to students’ developing happy, healthy and productive lives.

Recently, the Gym floor was beautifully restored and the walls updated. The Cobras have returned to the Gym for competition, and support for the teams is increasingly strong.

Goal
To embark on a lasting improvement project, a $400,000 fundraising campaign to “Raise the Roof” and make additional Gym improvements. Improvements will be complete by the beginning of fall semester 2012.

Plans
Plans for improvements to Smith-Canter Gymnasium:

• Replace the roof and repair damage to ceiling

• Install new guttering

• Replace windows

• Install new exhaust fans

• Install ramp for access by the physically challenged

• Re-landscaping of Quad in Gym area
