About the Raise the Roof Campaign:
The Smith-Canter Gymnasium, affectionately called the “Cobra Den,” is known in the Appalachian Athletic Conference for its lively, loud atmosphere that heightens the VI basketball teams’ home court advantage.  VI has initiated the “Raise the Roof” campaign, a $400,000 capital improvement plan, to benefit students and the entire College community.

Case
The Smith-Canter Gymnasium, or “Cobra Den,” has been deemed a priority project for vital repairs and lasting improvements which will boost the quality of student life and allow opportunities to realize the full potential of the Gym as a campus and community venue. While use for athletics is top priority, the Gym is an ideal facility for other events such as academic and professional fairs, receptions, community sporting events and summer camps.

During more than eight decades since the Gym was constructed in 1928, hundreds of students have improved their wellbeing through athletic training and competition, physical fitness and supporting classmates with Cobra team spirit. Combined with the academic experience, these activities contribute to students’ developing happy, healthy and productive lives.

Recently, the Gym floor was beautifully restored and the walls updated. The Cobras have returned to the Gym for competition, and support for the teams is increasingly strong.

Goal
To embark on a lasting improvement project, a $400,000 fundraising campaign to “Raise the Roof” and make additional Gym improvements. Improvements will be complete by the beginning of fall semester 2012.

Plans
Plans for improvements to Smith-Canter Gymnasium:

• Replace the roof and repair damage to ceiling

• Install new guttering

• Replace windows

• Install new exhaust fans

• Install ramp for access by the physically challenged

• Re-landscaping of Quad in Gym area

Reception for YCCC Students and their families @ Virginia Intermont College - Harrison-Jones Memorial Hall
Apr 19 @ 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm

Astrophotography

Professors Jessica Turner and Chuck Pearson, and the two will host a reception for the middle school students and their families in Harrison-Jones on Friday April 19, 4:30-5:30 p.m.  The media and anyone interested in astrophotography are invited to attend.

For the past six weeks, Drs. Pearson and Turner, with the assistance of interns at the College, have worked with at-risk students from Virginia Middle School and Vance Middle School in Bristol, Virginia and Tennessee. The students will exhibit their photos alongside a digital exhibit at the reception. During the six-week program students were introduced to a wide variety of resources in the Smithsonian’s Micro-Observatory Telescope Network, including the ability to control the robotic telescopes via the Internet and use its software to capture their versions of the cosmos. The students’ chosen images, as well as their captions, poems, and reflections on the program, will be on display during the reception. Refreshments will be served.
