OLATHE, Kan. – Fifteenth seeded Virginia Intermont College (21-2-0) moved on to the second round of the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship Tournament by defeating 18th seeded John Brown University (Ark.) 3-1 at the Olathe District Activity Center.
Virginia Intermont took an early lead on a goal in the fourth minute of play by senior forward Godfrey Mugisha, with the assist coming from junior midfielder Esteban Machado. Six minutes later the Cobras made it a 2-0 game on a score by junior forward Rob Sejjemba. Senior midfielder Rob Johnson had the assist.
John Brown cut the Virginia Intermont lead in half on a goal in the 65th minute by senior defender Federico Suarez. Sophomore midfielder Griff Hanning was credited with the assist. However, Virginia Intermont secured the victory in the 74th minute when a shot by Sejjemba deflected off of a John Brown defender into the goal.
Virginia Intermont moves on to face second seeded Rio Grande (Ohio) (20-0-1), while John Brown ends the season with a record of 13-5-2.
